International Workshop on Systems and Architectures
for Computer Assisted Interventions 2010
China National Convention Center (CNCC), Beijing/China, Sept. 24th, 2010
The goal of this workshop is to establish a forum for discussing open interfaces, architectures, interoperability, and standards for the development of computer assisted intervention systems. This topic was chosen based on overwhelming interest expressed at the "Systems and Architectures" workshop at MICCAI 2008 and 2009. The 2008 workshop focused on toolkits; in 2009 it emphasized the importance of open interfaces and standards. In 2010, we will focus on "Modularization and Standardization of CAS Systems and Frameworks". As before, this workshop will include strong participation from industry and academia.
Modularization of surgical assist systems is of growing importance due to the increasing complexity of the components such a system consists of. Forthcoming systems will have to depend on reliable components and frameworks, which are used as building blocks to realize the desired functionality. Standards are the key to modularization since they allow for cross-vendor interoperability of systems and modules.
The workshop presentations will inform participants about formal standardization efforts, such as DICOM in Surgery WG24, academic efforts at interoperability, such as OpenIGTLink, TIMMS and SAW, as well as open interfaces to commercial products. Several examples of CAI systems will be presented to illustrate success stories and areas for improvements.
We encourage the submission of full papers (min. 4, max. 8 pages) in Midas Journal format. Papers will be reviewed by the workshop committee. Accepted papers will be presented as plenary talks and will be included in a special issue of the Midas Journal. Papers should be submitted online via the Midas Journal. A special issue has been created for this workshop. This is a private issue, so papers will not be made public unless they are accepted for the workshop.
Topics of interest will include but are not limited to:
Architectures and Frameworks for Computer Assisted Interventions
Systems integration and the digital operating room
- Applications for computer assisted surgery
Progress and status of standardization efforts, such as DICOM, IHE, CANopen, ISO 11073, MD FIRE, MD ICE, IEC 80001
Open issues in the standardization process, e.g. semantics, standardized descriptions of components and device communication
Regulatory and liability issues and solutions for the modularization of CAI systems
Opportunities for further integration and interoperability
Discussion of successes and unmet needs
