On October 5 and 6 the 12th Interventional MRI Symposium will take place in Boston (USA). There, Prof. Andreas Melzer will lead the “Special Session for European Focused Ultrasound Charitable Society”, in which he will also share his knowledge on “Novel Technologies and Applications of MR Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) and High Intensive Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)” as a guest speaker. In addition, poster contributions on the topics “Status Quo and Demands for MR-Guided Endomyocardial Biopsies” and “Integration of a MR-Compatible Robotic Arm for PET/MRI Guided Focused Ultrasound Treatment” will be presented.

The 70th Congress of the German Society of Urology (DGU) took place from September 26 – 29 in Dresden under the motto “Tradition, Innovation and Responsibility”. Here, Prof. Andreas Melzer and Dr. Stefan Franke presented the operating theatre of tomorrow – on the one hand as guest speaker at the opening plenum and on the other hand in the forum “Robot-assisted surgical techniques of tomorrow”.

At this year’s Conference of the German Society for Biomedical Engineering in Aachen, ICCAS scientists contributed with several topics.
Prof. Thomas Neumuth gave a keynote lecture on “Patient Specific Model Guided Therapy”. Furthermore, Dr. Stefan Franke spoke about “Context-Awareness for Control Consoles in Integrated Operating Rooms” and Dr. Claire Chalopin about “Hyperspectral Based Discrimination of Thyroid and Parathyroid During Surgery”. Xinrui Zhang held a lecture on “Combination of Focused Ultrasound Hyperthermia (FUS-HT) and Radiation Therapy: Validation of In Vitro Effects in a Preliminary Study”.
In two years the BMT will take place in Leipzig.

The annual congress of the Cardiovascular And Interventional Radiological Society of Europe took place from September 22 to 25 in Lisbon. Here, research group leader Dr. Lisa Landgraf presented the topics “Towards the integration of robotic concepts into the interventional oncology workflow of combined focused ultrasound and radiation therapy” and “Ultrasound therapy system for high throughput in vitro analysis” in poster form.

On September 25-26, the SZ Congress „Digital Health – Rethinking Health Care – Changes in the Health Care Sector due to Interconnection“ takes place in Munich.
Prof. Thomas Neumuth is one of the experts of the panel discussion on “Smart Hospital: How Digital Applications and Technologies Simplify Therapy- and Administration Processes”. Diverse discussion partners from science, industry and medicine will talk on subjects including challenges of inpatient and outpatient care and the use of information and communication technology and how to use digital opportunities and start-up solutions in hospital procedures.

At the MICCAI satellite workshop “OR 2.0 – Context Aware Operating Theaters” Juliane Neumann won the Best Paper Award for her work: “Perioperative workflow simulation and optimization in orthopedic surgery”. Another lecture on “A method for the context-aware assignment of medical device functions to input devices in integrated operating rooms” was held by Dr. Stefan Franke.
Furthermore, the scientists PD Dr. Steffen Oeltze-Jafra and Jan Gaebel of the Digital Patient Model research group and colleagues from the University of Magdeburg hosted a tutorial on “ModelsCDS: Digital Therapy and Patient Models for Clinical Decision Support”.

In August, youtuber Lisa Ruhfus looked around ICCAS and, among other things, informed herself about the functionalities of the future operating theatre. Her informative video was commissioned by the BMBF initiative “Workplaces of the Future” and is now oline to bee seen:

On September 13-15, ICCAS invited to the 17th Annual Conference of the Society for Computer and Robotic Assisted Surgery (CURAC) at the Leipzig University Medical Campus. According to the motto “Connected into the Future” about 100 experts from the fields of medical computer science, engineering and medicine jointly discussed possibilities and challenges on computer- and robot-controlled assistances in operating rooms. The keynote speakers Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang (director of the Hamlyn Center for Robotic Surgery, London) and Prof. Jens J. Rassweiler (director of the Urology-Dept., SLK Clinics Heilbronn) held impressive lectures on worldwide developments of medical robot applications. Within the “Get Together” ICCAS presented its research world, especially the fully networked operating room. The Best Paper Award ceremony took place in the oldtimer location DaCapo on the social evening. The first prize went to Simon Strzeletz and his team from the Laboratory for Computer-Assisted Medicine at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences.
