From March 21 until 23, ICCAS presented its “Intelligent Operating Room” at the XPOMET© Convention in the Leipzig Zoo Congress Hall. Barbara Klepsch – Saxony’s State Minister of Social Affairs and Consumer Protection – visited the booth during the event opening. Prof. Thomas Neumuth’s lecture on “Medical Device Interoperability in the OR of the Future” aroused great interest.

DPM group leader PD Dr.-Ing. Steffen Oeltze-Jafra was elected as new member of the executive committee of the “Visual Computing in Biology and Medicine” working group. The group deals with image analysis, visualization and interaction in the field of image-based diagnostics and therapy in biology and medicine. It cooperates with related organizations, especially with the CURAC.

headline-marker ICCAS is Exhibitor at XPOMET© Convention 2018

“Amazing Medicine” promises the first XPOMET© Convention which will be held in Leipzig in the Congress Hall by the Zoo” from March 21. – 23. There, ICCAS will present the unique functioning of its “Intelligent Operating Room” in the exhibitor area “Future Hospital”. The exhibit shows, how computer models are used for the patients therapy. With the help of a virtual operating room and a patient phantom an endoscopic sinus surgery will be performed. Who wants to experience more about “Medical Device Interoperability in the OR of the Future” is very welcome to attend the lecture of Prof. Thomas Neumuth on the second day of the convention. The scientists at the ICCAS-booth are looking forward to many visitors, not only during the planned Use Case Sessions.

headline-marker DPM-Group Meets Interactive Media Lab Dresden

At the beginning of March, researchers of the Interactive Media Lab Dresden visited the ICCAS and the ENT-tumorboard of Leipzig University Hospital to inform themselves about the current state of research on exploration and visualization of complex patient data. The guests from the Institute for Software and Multimedia Technology of the Technische Universität Dresden primarily deal with multimodal human-computer-interaction and develop innovative user interfaces – topics related to the work of the Digital Patient Model group. The scientists aim collaboration in the area of exploration of decision support models for the preparation and implementation of the tumor board.

headline-marker Prof. Melzer appointed in Board of the International Association of High Tech Surgeons

Professor Andreas Melzer was appointed Chairman of the Advisory Board for Internal Affairs of the High Tech Surgery Association.

The High Tech Surgery Association was founded in 2015 and brings together more than 9000 professionals in the world in their specialties. One important aim is to exchange and promote knowledge about advances in surgical technology, new approaches and all scientific advances applied to the surgical field. Furthermore, the association wants to promote scientific studies in order to develop and increase new trends and education in surgical fields and courses and training workshops around the world, spreading knowledge in the minimally invasive surgery area.

Prof. Ulf Leser – head of the “Knowledge Management in Bioinformatics” chair at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will speak about the project “PREDICT: Knowledge Management for Precision Oncology” at Leipzig University Hospital, on Monday, March 12, 2018.

headline-marker Launch of joint project ‘MR-Suitable Flexible Biopsy Forceps’

In January 2018, the kick-off meeting of the newly launched joint project ‘MR-Suitable Flexible Biopsy Forceps for Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling’ took place in Dettingen/Erms. Project partner of this BMBF-funded KMU-innovative project is EPflex Feinwerktechnik GmbH, which is located there.
Goal is to research a worldwide first MR-suitable flexible biopsy forceps. This should improve the minimally invasive and image-guided removal of tissue samples without the previous high x-ray exposure. The subproject of ICCAS is under the direction of Prof. Andreas Melzer and deals with fundamental research of novel MRI and x-ray markers as well as experimental set-ups for the testing of the biopsy forceps.

headline-marker ICCAS welcomed Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and numerous guests at status seminars SONO-RAY and ICCAS

Right at the beginning of the new year, distinguished visitors were welcomed at the ICCAS. On the day of the two status seminars SONO-RAY and ICCAS, Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, who visited Leipzig University for the first time since taking office, was warmly welcomed. Prof. Andreas Melzer, Prof. Thomas Neumuth and Prof. Andreas Dietz gave an insight into the current development of state-of-the-art OR-technologies and let the Prime Minister lend a hand in the research operating room. In addition, Kretschmer was explained a robot-assisted therapy approach from the SONO-RAY project. Further guests were Rector Prof. Beate Schücking, the Prorectors Prof. Erich Schröger and Prof. Thomas Lenk and Dean Prof. Michael Stumvoll from Leipzig University, Prof. Wolfgang E. Fleig from Leipzig University Hospital as well as Prof. Markus Krabbes and Prof. Jens Jäkel from the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences for Technology, Economics and Culture (HTWK).

Approximately 90 guests attended the status seminars and listened to the exciting presentations on the research work carried out in 2017 as well as to the outlook on future tasks. The SONO-RAY project group opened the event day with an own status seminar together with the scientists of the cooperation partner OncoRay (Dresden), led by Prof. Mechthild Krause. The collaboration with the Clinics for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine of Leipzig University Hospital, the Saxonian Incubator for Clinical Translation (SIKT), the Helmholtz Center Dresden Rossendorf and the Fraunhofer IBMT was recognized.

The ICCAS status seminar was opened by Prof. Andreas Melzer and Prof. Erich Schröger, Prorector for Research and Young Academics. After the group leaders gave a summarized overview of the research areas of ICCAS, the scientists presented their achievements in the last part of the event by means of selected live demonstrations. The special day ended with the ICCAS advisory board meeting.
