On October 9th, 2025, the Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS) at the University of Leipzig welcomed Her Excellency Maeve Collins, Ambassador of Ireland to Germany. The visit focused on ICCAS’s current research and development work at the interface of medical informatics, engineering, and medicine.
In discussions with Thomas Neumuth and scientists from the center, the ambassador learned about key research topics such as intraoperative assistance systems, the networking of medical devices, data-based decision support, and the concept of the patient room of the future. She was particularly interested in how ICCAS’s research results are being translated into practical technological solutions in collaboration with clinical partners and industrial companies.
Another item on the agenda was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ICCAS and the Irish company RedZinc, represented by CEO Donal Morris. RedZinc specializes in AI-supported hospital-at-home technologies. The aim of the agreement is to launch a joint research initiative on digital technologies that support everyday clinical practice and patient-centered care.
The visit was accompanied by Thomas Horn, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH, as well as representatives of the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy, and Climate Protection, Invest Region Leipzig, leap:up GmbH, and the Department of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Digitalization of the City of Leipzig. Their participation underscores the importance of international cooperation for Saxony as a location for technology and innovation.
With the new cooperation framework, ICCAS is strengthening its role as a bridge between science, industry, and clinical practice—and further advancing the international networking of medical technology research in Leipzig.
