headline-markerRESEARCH ON PERSONALIZED BLOOD TRANSFUSION STRATEGIES IN MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME FOR IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE

26.11.2021

The ICCAS is project partner within the PRO-RED study, which was recently approved by the German Cancer Aid with a funding amount of 463.421 €. Our institute is represented by the CTO Thomas Neumuth and KAIT project coordinator Alexander Oeser. In addition to the Clinic and Polyclinic for Hematology, Cell Therapy and Hemostaseology and the Clinic and Polyclinic for Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology, the research team behind PRO-RED includes other research institutions at the University of Leipzig, namely the Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (IMISE) and the Center for Clinical Studies (ZKS).

Over the next three years, the focus of the research will be on individualized blood transfusion strategies for low-risk patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). To this end, the test persons participating in the study will use a specially developed app to record continuously the severity of their anemia over a period of six months and, at the same time, fill out a quality-of-life questionnaire specific to MDS. The generated data will be applied to the development of a quality-of-life-based transfusion model that will signal the need for a blood transfusion individually for each patient. At the end, the research team hopes to fill a long-standing gap toward establishing international standards for recommending transfusion strategies in low-risk MDS patients.
