Deputy Executive Director

+49 341 97-12001

Background and Position

Prof. Thomas Neumuth is an engineer and computer scientist. He is vice director of the Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS) and scientific director of the research group Model-based Automation and Integration. As such, he plays an important role in the conceptual design and development of the ICCAS and is partly responsible for its standing as a leading center for medical technology in Germany.

His research interests are focused on the fields of model-based medicine, smart biomedical technology, and situation-aware information systems.

The results of his scientific work and his role in flagship projects on the field of medical device networks in the operating room (such as OR.NET) have supported the development and integration of biomedical information technologies. His work for smart medical technology systems has been selected as reference project of the German Ministry of Education and Research for the Federal Chancellor of Germany at the 2017 Digital Summit and demonstrated the establishment of ICCAS as one of the leading research centers in Germany.

Digital Summit 2017

From a scientific point of view, the work of Neumuth and his working group has greatly contributed to the field of situation-aware information systems and smart medical technology. Since its founding in 2011, the working group has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in this field, contributing to its acceptance as leading technology.

In addition, Neumuth has held lectures in the fields of medical engineering, medical informatics, and medical innovation management at different Medical and Computer Science Faculties in Germany. In 2014, he founded the Digital Operating Room Summer School (DORS), which has since become an important part of international medical technology education.

During his career, he has worked with international project partners in Europe, Asia, and America. As part of his international activities, he is also responsible for the development of medical information systems and biomedical technology of the European Modular Field Hospital (EUMFH) which is funded by the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) of the European Commission. The EUMFH is a highly mobile hospital according to WHO EMT class 3 for rapid response after sudden onset disasters.

One important part of his work is fundraising. Over the last six years, more than € 13 million of funding have been invested in ICCAS. This funding includes national reference projects such as OR.NET – Secure and dynamic networking in the operating theater and clinic, Digital patient and process modeling or SONO-RAY – combination therapy for tumors with magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound and radiotherapy.

Neumuth is active in many professional societies, such as the German Association of Engineers (VDE), the Society for Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT), the Society of Computer- and robot-assisted Surgery (CURAC), and the German Society of Medical Informatics (GMDS).
