Computer scientist Mario Cypko organized this year’s Young Investigator Networking (YINS) session of the International Society for Computer Aided Surgery. The international non-profit-association pursues the goal of advancing new technologies and research activities in the area of computer-assisted surgery. The characteristic of the YINS session is its presentation format which addresses young researchers. Here, they can present themselves their profile and scientific ideas to senior researchers and industry representatives in a relaxed atmosphere. This simplifies establishing contacts within this research sector.

headline-marker ICCAS im Technischen Komitee der IHE Surgery – Domäne

Since August 2016, ICCAS is an official member of the ‘Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise’ (IHE) Initiative. The initiative is intended to improve interoparablity in the health care sector. It is organized in domains. ICCAS is mainly active in the ‘Surgery’ domain. In each domain IHE-profiles are assigned to specific problems. The profiles define which people and activities may be necessary for the problem-solving and which existing standards are used. ICCAS computer scientist Erik Schreiber has been recently appointed to the Technical Committee of the ‘Surgery’ domain. The Committee primarily examines new profile proposals. Erik Schreiber also works on profiles.

headline-marker ICCAS hält Partnerschaft mit Forschungsabteilung der Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexiko

Since more than one year, ICCAS maintains a partnership with the engineering department of the University of Guanajuato in Mexico. The goal is the development of highly specific analysis algorithms for image processing.
A first joint project deals with the automatic detection of residuals of brain tumor in intraoperative ultrasound image data. For this purpose a new segmentation algorithm was developed at the Universidad de Guanajuato which is now being evaluated in collaboration with a doctoral student from Mexico at ICCAS.

headline-marker M2CAI-Workshop mit ICCAS-Beteiligung

At this year’s M2CAI-Workshop ICCAS presents its work on the integrated operating room with the two contributions: ‘Towards the intelligent OR – Implementation of distributed, context-aware automation in an integrated surgical working environment’ and ‘BPMNSIX – A BPMN 2.0 Surgical Intervention Extension’.

The M2CAI-Workshop is a satellite event of the ‘International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions’ (MICCAI). Here, clinicians, researchers and medical companies discuss issues and solutions on the acquisition, analysis, modeling, and monitoring of computer assisted interventions.

headline-marker Start des Meta-ZIKs SONO-RAY

On October 1, 2016, the joint project SONO-RAY organized by the two ZIK Centers of Innovation Competence OncoRay in Dresden and ICCAS in Leipzig started. The project combines MR-guided focused ultrasound and radiation therapy to improve the effectiveness of cancer treatment. Funding totaling €6.2 million is being provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Prof. A. Melzer is the leader of the project.

headline-marker Bürger und Prominenz am ICCAS-Forschungsstand zum Tag der deutschen Wiedervereinigung in Dresden

During the celebrations of the Day of German Unity, many visitors were attracted by the common stand of the University Medicine Dresden and Leipzig. ICCAS presented itself with a mobile version of the ‘Intelligent Operating Room’. Guests could simulate ENT surgery on a phantom head in interaction with the innovative assistant systems. Many interesting conversations were held with interested citizens and representatives from the Government of the Free State of Saxony. State Premier Stanislaw Tillich and State Minister for Arts and Sciences Dr. Eva-Maria Stange were among the guests in the festival tent.

This year, the 28th Conference of the international Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (SMIT 2016) takes place from Oct. 05-08 in Delft (the Netherlands). There will be ICCAS-lectures in the special session ‘Intelligent Operating Room’ on Friday (Oct. 7, 2016) from 10:30 bis 12:00 am.
A mobile version of ICCAS’s „Intelligent Operating Room“ can be experienced at the exhibition.

Furthermore, Prof. Andreas Melzer is represented in the committees of experts on „Medical technology in MRT“ and „Ultrasound“.

Saxony and its capital Dresden are hosts of this year’s central celebrations of German Unity Day. On this occasion Leipzig University Medicine presents itself on the mile “Science and Research” with hands-on science. Anyone who wants to find out more about how the intelligent operating room of the future works can come at the ICCAS-stand and slip into the role of a surgeon. A mobile OR-version and a phantom head make it possible for guests to test themselves use cases from ENT surgery in interaction with the special technology.
